Unsubscribes and Opt-Outs

Every email a sequence sends ends with an unsubscribe line: "Unsubscribe from future emails from this sender." It's added automatically when the email sends; you'll see it previewed at the bottom of the editor, and it can't be removed. Mail providers expect it, and honoring it is what keeps your sending reputation healthy.

The unsubscribe line previewed under an email

What the candidate sees

Clicking the link opens a page that says "You are about to unsubscribe {email} from future emails from this sender" with a Confirm Unsubscribe button. Nothing happens until they confirm, so a link preview or a security scanner opening the link doesn't unsubscribe anyone. After confirming they see "You have been successfully unsubscribed."

What happens in Betterleap

  • The address goes on your workspace's unsubscribe list. It applies to every project and every recruiter in your organization, not just the sequence they were in.
  • Any remaining steps for that candidate are blocked. Their outreach status becomes Unsubscribed ("Opted out of emails"), which you can filter by on the Candidates tab, and their email history shows an "Unsubscribed" label.
  • In Search and when adding candidates, they appear greyed out with an Unsubscribed badge and can't be selected for outreach.
  • A reply that plainly asks you to stop ("please stop emailing me") is treated the same way as clicking the link.

Unsubscribe list vs Do Not Contact

They're two separate lists, both workspace-wide, both enforced at send time:

  • Unsubscribe list: built by candidates themselves, from the link or a stop reply. You don't manage it; removing someone requires Betterleap support.
  • Do Not Contact: built by your Admins, for opt-outs that reach you another way, competitor domains, client staff. Managed in Settings. See Do Not Contact Lists.

Removing an address from Do Not Contact never lifts an unsubscribe.

Tip: If a candidate unsubscribed and later asks to hear from you again, email them from your own inbox rather than through a sequence, or ask [email protected] to clear the unsubscribe.

Frequently asked questions

Can I turn the unsubscribe link off for a project?

No. It's part of every sequence email.

Does an unsubscribe count against my reply rate?

No. It's tracked as an opt-out, separately from replies.

A candidate unsubscribed by mistake. Can I resubscribe them?

Not from the app. Ask [email protected], with the candidate's written request to be contacted again.
